Etymology edit

From Proto-Albanian *dzelmā, related to dhallë (buttermilk) as per Orel.[1] On the other hand, Demiraj derives it from Proto-Albanian *δem(-) as cognate to Ancient Greek δημός (dēmós, fat) and Romanian zeamă (juice; sauce),[2] though Orel refutes this on the basis that, if related to the Greek term, the proto-form should have begun with a *d- while the term has a dh-.

Noun edit

dhjamë m (plural dhjamë, definite dhjami, definite plural dhjamët)

  1. fat
    Synonym: lyrë
