Etymology edit

Unknown origin. There are several theories, none with much evidence. Possibly a diminutive of dox (“dark, dusky”) +‎ -ga (diminutive suffix) (similar to frox >> frocga); or a diminutive of *docce (“stump, dock, doll”). See dog.
