Compound of dokter (“doctor”) + bedah (“surgery”, literally “torn, broken”), calque of Dutch wondarts (“surgeon”, literally “wound doctor”). Compare to Japanese 執刀医 (shittōi, “surgeon”, literally “operator + physician”).
