Calque of German Treibmittel, equivalent to driva (drive) +‎ medel (means, medium). Attested since 1874.

Usage notes edit

Typically used for liquid fuels, such as gasoline or diesel, that power vehicles. For other kinds of fuel, the word bränsle is more frequently used instead.
