drop volley (plural drop volleys)

  1. A drop shot hit with a volley.
    • 1968, Tennis-badminton-squash Guide:
The drop volley is a delicate shot demanding natural feel. However, it may be suggested that on this shot the racket face is open, extra underspin is imparted by downward movement of the racket, and the touch is "soft."
    • 2001, Nick Bollettieri, Bollettieri's Tennis Handbook, Human Kinetics, →ISBN, page 171:
When you find your opponent comfortably deep in the backcourt, do not forget the drop volley. The occasional drop volley forces the opponent to cover the short court and play closer to the baseline.
    • 2004, Carol Matsuzaki, Tennis Fundamentals, Human Kinetics, →ISBN, page 76:
The drop volley (figure 8.3) is a volley that is hit as a drop shot. Usually a drop volley is hit off a relatively low incoming shot; high shots should be hit with a putaway volley.
