From the name of a pagan goddes Prenda, from Proto-Indo-European *prāy-, *prēy- 'like, love'. Compare West Frisian freed, Dutch vrijdag, German Freitag, Danish fredag, Sanskrit prīyā́ (“wife”). Probably a calque of Latin dies Veneris.
