Latin edit

Etymology edit

Present participle of effulgeō.

Participle edit

effulgēns (genitive effulgentis); third-declension one-termination participle

  1. shining, glittering, gleaming, flashing
    • 29 BCE – 19 BCE, Virgil, Aeneid 2.615–616:
“‘Iam summās arcēs Trītōnia, respice, Pallās
īnsēdit, nimbō effulgēns et Gorgone saeva.’”
“‘Already, upon the highest heights – look behind you! – Tritonian Pallas has taken possession [of the fortress], with her divine aura flashing, and dreadful Gorgon.’”
(Venus reveals the gods to Aeneas: The enveloping mist which otherwise would hide Pallas/Athena from mortal view now resembles a stormcloud.)
