Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *agjō, Proto-Indo-European *ak-yā-, ultimately from ak- (sharp, pointed). Germanic cognates include Old Frisian egg, Old English ecg, Dutch egge, Old High German egga (German Ecke), Old Norse egg (Icelandic egg, Swedish egg). The Indo-European root is also the source of Latin aciēs (edge, sharpness), Ancient Greek ἀκίς (point).
