From Proto-Germanic *agjō, Proto-Indo-European *ak-yā-, ultimately from ak- (“sharp, pointed”). Germanic cognates include Old Frisian egg, Old English ecg, Dutch egge, Old High German egga (German Ecke), Old Norse egg (Icelandic egg, Swedish egg). The Indo-European root is also the source of Latin aciēs (“edge, sharpness”), Ancient Greek ἀκίς (“point”).
