Variant of anghraifft, alteration of Middle Welsh agreith, from Proto-Brythonic *aŋkrėθ, perhaps from Vulgar Latin *increptus, from Latin increpitus, past participle of increpō (“to upbraid”); prefix in- (“in, against”) + crepō (“to talk noisily”).
