1650s, from French épistolaire, from Latin epistolaris, from Latin epistola (“letter”) (English epistle),[1] from Ancient Greek ἐπιστολή (epistolē) from ἐπιστέλλω (epistellō, “I send a message”) from ἐπί (epi, “upon”) + στέλλω (stellō, “I prepare, send”).
