Etymology edit

Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ped-skuH-t-, from *ped- (foot) + *(s)kewH- (to cover); the former component is cognate with English foot, and the latter with Ancient Greek σκῦτος (skûtos, skin, hide).[1] Direct cognate with Welsh esgid (shoe).
