    • 1822, James Watt and John Robison, A System of Mechanical Philosophy, volume III, page 546:
      Were the heavenly spaces perfectly transparent, we should no more see them than the purest water through which we see other objects; and we see them as we see water tinged with milk or other fæculæ.
