From Old Norse fæla (to frighten away), from Proto-Germanic *fēlijaną (to frighten, terrify), from *fēlaz (frightening, terrifying). Related to Norwegian fæl (appalling), Middle High German vālant (fiend, demon), Old Norse fála (witch, hag).
