From Proto-Germanic *faþǭ, *faþō (“father's sister”), from a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *ph₂tḗr (“father”). Akin to Old Frisian fethe (“father's sister, aunt”), Middle Low German vade (“father's sister”), Old English fæder (“father”).
