felső
Hungarian edit
Alternative forms edit
Etymology edit
From the archaic noun fel (“the upper part of something”) + -ső[1]
Pronunciation edit
Adjective edit
felső (comparative feljebbi or feljebb lévő or felsőbb, superlative legfelső or legfelsőbb)
Usage notes edit
Adjectives ending in -só/-ső form their superlative with the leg- prefix (legfelső). The regular form (legfelsőbb) also exists but only in specific context:
- legfelső fiók ― topmost drawer
- legfelsőbb bíróság ― supreme court
Similarly, feljebbi or feljebb lévő means “located at a higher position”, while felsőbb is mostly used in an abstract sense (for example “higher powers”, “upper classes”, or “orders from a superior”).
