fractional number (plural fractional numbers)

1. (grammar) A word that expresses one or more of a specific number of parts of a whole.

   Synonyms: fractional, fractional numeral, partitive numeral

   In English, most ordinal numbers double as fractional numbers — "third", "fourth", and so on — with the exception of "second", whose corresponding fractional number is "half".

2. (arithmetic) A fraction, such as $\textstyle {\frac {1}{2}}$ or $\textstyle {\frac {3}{5}}$.
