Etymology

Proto-Germanic *friþuz, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *prāy-, *prēy- (like, love). Cognates include Old Frisian fretho, Old English friþ, Old High German fridu (German Frieden), Old Norse friðr (Icelandic friður, Swedish and Danish fred), Dutch vrede. The Indo-European root is also the source of Greek πραυς, Common Slavic *prijati (Old Church Slavonic прити) and *prijatel ‘friend’, Old Irish ríar (Welsh rhydd ‘free’).
