gæv
Danish edit
Pronunciation edit
Etymology 1 edit
From Old Danish gæv, giæv, gev, from Old Norse gæfr (“comfortable”), from Proto-Germanic *gēbiz, cognate with Dutch gaaf (“complete, smooth”). Derived from the verb *gebaną (“to give”).
Adjective edit
gæv (neuter gævt, plural and definite singular attributive gæve)
Etymology 2 edit
From Old Danish giav, giæf, from Old Norse gjǫf (“gift”), from Proto-Germanic *gebō, cognate with Gothic 𐌲𐌹𐌱𐌰 (giba). Derived from *gebaną (“to give”). A related word has replaced this word in its central meaning "gift", namely gave, which is probably a loan from Middle Low German gābe, from Proto-Germanic *gēbǭ (“gift, giving”), cognate with German Gabe.
