From Proto-Indo-European *gheub(h)- 'to bend, move'. Compare Lithuanian gaubiù, gaũbti (cover, wrap up, curve), Old Norse goppa (jump up and down, swing) and Old Church Slavic pogubiti (wreck)[1].
