Inherited from Middle French garance, from Old French garance, warance, from Frankish *wratja, from Proto-Germanic *wratjō (“red dye”). Cognate with Old High German rezza, reiza (“scarlet; purple; crimson; red; madder”), Old English wrǣtt, wrǣtte (“crosswort; madder”).
