Etymology edit

Probably from Old Frisian gete (outpouring), from Proto-Germanic *gutiz (a gush; downpour; cloudburst), related to the verb *geutaną (to pour). Cognate with Old English gyte (a gush; flood; shedding; spillage), German Guss (downpour).
