Etymology edit

From Proto-Germanic *jēmaraz (miserable, sorrowful), from Proto-Indo-European *yem- (to hold, match, defeat). Cognate with Old Saxon jāmar, Old High German jāmar (German substantive Jammer (misery)). More at yammer.
