From Middle Dutch garwe, from Old Dutch *garwa, from Proto-West Germanic *garwu, perhaps a variant of *garu (“prepared, ready (of food”)), as the plant was used medicinally for digestion.[1][2]

Cognate with English yarrow and German (Schaf)garbe.
