giày

VietnameseEdit

EtymologyEdit

王力《汉越语研究》("Studies on Sino-Vietnamese lexicon" by Wang Li) lists "giày" as a possible borrowing of Sinitic ("shoe") with post-borrowing "pronunciation Vietnamisation" (汉语越化). Its Chu Nom reading 𥀌 (sound from ), however, has made this a dubious possibility. "hài" would be predicted from 鞋 using the Middle Chinese-Vietnamese sound correspondences.
