From Proto-Finnic *halmëh, borrowed from either Proto-Germanic *halmaz or Proto-Baltic [Term?] (whence Lithuanian želmuo). Cognate with Estonian ale, Karelian halmeh, Ludian halmeh and Veps haumeh.
