Polish edit

Etymology edit

Uncertain. Possibly borrowed from Ottoman Turkish حرامی + دره (ravine of the highwayman), a site of frequent ambushes for Polish envoys heading to Constantinople. Sławski proposes a derivation from Persian γarmīdan (to quarrel), rejected by most scholars.
