From Old Norse hjarni (“the brain”), whence the Old Norse hjarnamænir (“the skull”) from Proto-Germanic *hirzniją, *hirsniz (“brain”), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱerh₂s- (“head”). Cognate with Old High German hirni (“brain”), Swedish hjärna (“brain”), Latin cerebrum (“brain, skull”), Ancient Greek κάρα (kára, “head”), and Old English hærn (“brain”) (whence English harns).
