Etymology edit

From Proto-Hmong-Mien *hməŋH (night). Cognate with Iu Mien hmuangz; outside of Hmong-Mien, cognate with Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-mun (dark) (whence Old Chinese (OC *hmɯːn, “dusk, dark”)) and *muːŋ ~ r/s-muːk (misty; dark) (whence (OC *moːŋ, “blind; dark”) and perhaps (OC *meːŋ, “dark; deep; underworld”)).[1]
