From Proto-Albanian *skumba, nasal present from Proto-Indo-European *skewbʰ- (compare English shove, Lithuanian skùbti (“to hurry”), Polish skubać (“to pluck”)). Alternatively, according to Hamp, from Proto-Albanian *humpo.
