From Old Danish huilk, huilkin, Old Norse hvílíkr, from Proto-Germanic *hwilīkaz (what kind of, what sort of), cognate with English which, German welcher, Gothic 𐍈𐌹𐌻𐌴𐌹𐌺𐍃 (ƕileiks). A compound of *hwaz (who) +‎ *-līkaz (shaped).
