From Old Irish dess (“right-hand; south; right, just; convenient, agreeable”), from Proto-Celtic *dexswos, from Proto-Indo-European *deḱswo-, from *deḱs- (“right-hand side”). Cognate with Irish deas and Scottish Gaelic deas.
