From Old Norse kœfa, whence also Faroese køva, Norwegian (nynorsk) kjøve. Compare the Icelandic form kvæfa, Norwegian kvæve, and Old Norse/obsolete Icelandic kvefja, Norwegian kveve, Swedish kväva (older form kvävja).
