Inherited from Ottoman Turkish قبوق (ḳabuḳ, “bark, rind, the skin or peel of a fruit, shell”),[1] from Proto-Turkic *kāpuk (“bark, shell”)[2] from Proto-Turkic *kāp- (“to surround”),[3][4] equivalent to kap + -uk.

- The hard layer over or around something naturally formed to protect it; shell, bark, skin of a fruit, rind or husk.
- Synonym: kışır
- The hard, brown outer layer around bread; crust.

- (astronomy) The outer layer surrounding liquid or gaseous core; crust.
- (zoology) The outer chitinaceous, siliceous, bony or keratinous layer around an animal.
