From Ottoman Turkish قادین (kadın), from Common Turkic *xātun (“queen, lady”), most likely from Sogdian [script needed] (γwtʾynh /xwatēn, xutēn/, “queen”).
Akin to Old Turkic 𐰴𐱃𐰆𐰣 (qatun, “queen”), Karakhanid قاتُونْ (qātūn, “noble woman”), Yakut хотун (qotun).
Compare hatun, a reborrowing of the same term from Persian.
