From Proto-Finnic *kahlëh, cognate with Karelian kahleh (“shackle, burden”), Ingrian kahle. Proposed to be either a further development of etymology 2,[1] or derived from Germanic (compare haahla (“trammel hook”) from Proto-Germanic *hanhlō).[2]
