Etymology edit

From Proto-Indo-European *ḱolh₂-m-, enlargment of *kolH- (awn) (cf. kalli). Compare Ancient Greek κάλαμος (kálamos, reed), Latin culmus (haulm), Old High German halam, Old Prussian salme (straw). A loan from Ancient Greek κάλαμος (kálamos) or Latin calamus is also possible.
