Inherited from Ottoman Turkish قاتق (ḳatıḳ, “anything added, anything eaten with bread to give a relish, a condiment”),[1] from Proto-Turkic *katïk (“anything added”) from *kat- (“to mix, to add, to tie to”),[2][3] equivalent to kat- + -ık.
