Probably from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *d-k(y)aːy (“crab”), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *d-k(j)aːj (“crab”). Cognate with Western Kayah ꤏꤝꤥ꤬ (hswò), Western Pwo ဆွ့ၪ, S'gaw Karen ဆွဲၣ် (hsweh̀).
