Inherited from Ottoman Turkish كنایه (kinaye, “an indirect expression, an allusion to or a hint at a thing, an innuendo”),[1] from Arabic كِنَايَة (kināya, “indirect expression, metonymy, metaphor, allusion”), verbal noun of كَنَى (kanā).[2] Cognates with Azerbaijani kinayə, Turkmen kinaýa, Uzbek kinoya.
