From Middle Breton clezeff, from Proto-Brythonic *klėðɨβ̃, from Proto-Celtic *kladiwos (compare Welsh cleddyf, Old Irish claideb). The Brythonic forms probably represent a borrowing from Goidelic, based on the unexpected shift of /w/ to /β̃/ (the expected inherited form would be *kleziv).
