Etymology

edit

From Middle Dutch cnokel, from Old Dutch *knukil, from Proto-West Germanic *knukil, from Proto-Germanic *knukilaz, a diminutive of *knukô (bone) (whence knook). Thus, it is synchronically equivalent to knook (bone) +‎ -el (diminutive suffix). Compare English knuckle, German Knöchel, Knochen, Danish kno, Swedish knoge.
