From Ottoman Turkish قوشمق (koşmak).[1] Further etymology uncertain; perhaps a semantic derivation from the etymology below. A development from the reciprocal form of kovmak, *koğuş-, is also possible.[2]

Etymology 2 edit

From Proto-Turkic *kōĺ- (pair, couple, to join, unite).[3] Cognate with Chuvash хуш (huš, to add, attach), Southern Altai кожор (kožor, to add), Kazakh қосу (qosu, to add), etc.
