From Swedish qvart (one fourth).

kortteli

  1. A block or city block (group of buildings in a city or town, demarcated by streets).
    • Kävelen vain korttelin ympäri.
      • I'm just going for a walk around the block.
  2. A block (distance from one street to another in a city).
  3. An obsolete Scandinavian unit of length, which equalled half a foot or one fourth of a kyynärä = 0.148 meters.
  4. An obsolete Russian unit of length, which equalled 0.1778 meters. To distinguish it from its Scandinavian counterpart it was often called venäläinen kortteli.
  5. An obsolete unit of volume, which equalled 0.32715 liters.
