Etymology edit
From Low German leschen (“to extinguish”), from Middle Low German leschen, from Old Saxon leskan, from Proto-West Germanic *leskan.
Related to modern Dutch lessen and modern German löschen. According to Svenska Akademiens ordbok the original meaning has been "to make something lay down" and related to ligga (“to lie”). See also Danish læske. The noun is first attested in writing in 1644[1] and is described as a verbal noun derived from läska, which is attested from 1559.[2]
