From la̠³⁵ + ma³⁵, with nasal assimilation at the first element and tone sandhi at the second. Ultimately from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s/ɡ-la. Cognate with Burmese လ (la.), Nuosu ꆪ (hlep, “moon (literary), month”), Old Chinese 夕 (OC *ljaːɡ), Tibetan ཟླ་བ (zla ba). Compare Zaiwa lvomo.
