Etymology edit
Inherited from Ottoman Turkish یادس (yādes, “interj. (It is borne in mind!) the expression used on again meeting between players of Philopena”),[1][2] from Persian یاد است (yâd-ast, “I remember”).[3]
Pronunciation edit
Noun edit
lades (definite accusative ladesi, plural ladesler)
- Ellipsis of lades oyunu (“game of lades”); a game where two people break the wishbone of a chicken, or in the absence of it a small stick, then the aim is to hand the opponent any item without them calling "I remember!" The player who gets to do it when the other forgets to call it wins the game, and the loser has to buy the gift previously agreed upon.[4]
