From Proto-Finnic *laipa (compare Estonian leib (“bread”)), borrowed from Proto-Germanic *hlaibaz (compare German Laib (“loaf”), English loaf).[1] Slavic words like Russian хлеб (xleb, “bread”) are likewise borrowed from Germanic.
