From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *leŋa. Cognate with Tagalog linga, Cebuano lunga, Rade ênga and Tetum lena. Compare also Proto-Tai *r.ŋaːᴬ (“sesame”) (whence Thai งา (ngaa)) and Proto-Mon-Khmer *lŋaaʔ ~ *lŋawʔ (“sesame”) (whence Khmer ល្ង (lngɔɔ)).
