Maybe from Proto-Indo-European *leh₂p- (to shine) and so cognate with Old Norse leiptr (lightning), Latin limpidus (bright), Ancient Greek λάμπω (lámpō, to shine), Lithuanian lópė (light), Latvian lāpa (torch).
