English edit

Etymology edit

From the larger size of the engine block assembly compared to a short block.

Noun edit

long block (plural long blocks)

  1. (automotive) An engine subassembly that consists of the assembled short block, plus the crankshaft, cylinder head, camshaft (usually), and valve train.

Usage notes edit

Not the same as big block, which refers to the physical size of an engine rather than the completeness of the subassembly.
